In 1908, Philipps launched DUCA, a competitor system to the Hupfeld DEA and the Welte-Mignon. DUCA could play one note more than the two competing systems - a small difference that was widely used in marketing. The DUCA's music rolls are the narrowest version of the reproduction rolls - Philipps' argument was that the narrower the paper surface, the less susceptible it was to changes in paper due to humidity. This is indeed the case. The DUCA reproduction rolls often have a striking reddish or pink paper and are easily recognisable by the solid metal sides that only this type of reproduction roll has.
On the box and the music roll is a label with the designation "Philipps Reproduktions-Klaviere", roll number, title, performer and often also the roll price at the time - there are no photos. There is a round eyelet at the beginning of the roll to attach it to the take-up reel. The DUCA rolls are only rarely available as well-preserved originals. The paper is 26.5 cm wide.
