How is the piano action preserved?

As the link between the piano player and the acoustic system, the keyboard and the action are of great importance. Old brand name actions (Schwander, Renner, Keller, Langer, Flemming, etc.) should still be in acceptable condition even after heavy use.

The hammer felts on older instruments that have been played a lot are sometimes very worn, have deep grooves or have even completely lost their original hammer shape. Regular maintenance - as well as an overhaul after appropriate use - of the action is necessary for a uniform and beautiful sound.

If the action is in good condition and / or well maintained, the keys are all at the same height and the touch feels similarly controlled on all keys. You can easily recognise worn axles in the action by the lateral play of the hammers or clicking noises when striking the keys. Played-out keyboard felts lead to too much lateral play.

Just like servicing a car that is used a lot, the piano and especially the action need regular attention from an expert.
