Woodworm in the piano?

The woodworm, or more precisely the common nail beetle and its larvae love the soft woods in pianos. Traces of woodworm infestation can often be found on old pianos.

If traces of woodworm (drilling dust) can be found anywhere, the woodworm has usually romped about in other invisible places. Whether the worm is still active cannot always be determined by old / fresh drilling dust. In any case, such an instrument must be checked professionally. Damaged wood must be renewed - and the instrument as a whole must be treated and protected against woodworm. This can be done selectively by certified specialist companies - or best of all by fumigation of the entire piano in a certified company.

We recently brought two pianos with suspected woodworm infestation to Binker GmbH in Lauf an der Pegnitz and conducted a short interview on questions concerning piano fumigation.

If your piano is infested with woodworm, we recommend that you act quickly. On request, we also offer to coordinate the transport and handling of the fumigation in a specialized company.

If the woodworm infestation is considerable and especially at substance elements such as the rest, a piano can sometimes no longer be restored with economically justifiable effort. There is also the danger that the woodworm may also attack other objects or components in the room or house.
