How is a piano stored?

Just about every piano also experiences phases of prolonged non-use. For very different reasons. At some point the question arises whether the space can and should not be better used in another way. Sometimes the piano needs a good place to stay for a transitional period. This is also the case when moving house, renovating a house, staying abroad for a longer period of time, clarifying inheritances, lack of space for small children, creative breaks in playing, etc.

A piano should not be left closed and unused for months or years, even in living rooms, because even then it runs the risk of being visited by pests, or developing lasting deficits due to lack of use and service. To maintain its value, it should also be tuned regularly (e.g. every 18-24 months) when it is not being played.

Under no circumstances may the instrument be placed in an unheated storage room, in the attic, in the garage or in the cellar. Commercial warehouses are also unsuitable, as they usually do not provide the necessary air conditioning for the piano. There, within a few days/weeks, the instrument suffers such severe damage to its substance that it can only be salvaged by extensive renovations.

If the piano no longer finds a place in the living room - and is to remain in the possession of the family, it is recommended to have it professionally stored. For the storage fee you will get the extra space and the good feeling that the instrument is waiting for you in good hands and protected from damage.

Some forwarders offer storage as take-away business - and cannot prove sufficient storage conditions. Over the last decades we have seen numerous instruments that have suffered considerable damage (cracking, pest infestation, body damage, etc.) due to incorrect transport or incorrect storage. In most cases, the owners were not able to make any claims due to lack of incoming / outgoing documentation.

Before the piano is badly stored, it may be better to sell it, otherwise storage costs, annoyance and loss of value may occur. So it is essential to check possible offers carefully and only store a piano where it is handled professionally and where this is documented.

If a piano is played and maintained regularly during storage, it can be used again after storage and return transport with a simple service. If storage conditions are poor, an inspection and, if necessary, repair is necessary. We recommend having the condition of the piano checked and documented during storage and removal from storage.

We offer professional storage of instruments - if desired, including regular playing and service. You can find our offer here. (link)
