After decades of dealing with pianos and people looking for them, we have come to realise that the right choice of piano is largely an emotional decision. Of course, rational aspects are also important - but we experience time and again how the much-cited spark is ignited and the choice falls in favour of a particular instrument. We can therefore only recommend that you search, discover and find in such a way that a really good decision is made.
Nevertheless, there are a few specific questions to consider in order to focus the search and selection. By trying things out, the view becomes clearer and clearer. So, upright or grand piano, grand or concert grand, acoustic piano, digital piano, USB/midi keyboard on a PC? Used or new? Which brand, which manufacturer? Buy, finance or rent? Which sound? What price range? What quality is hidden behind the many German-sounding brand names?
These questions may help with initial orientation.
- Who mainly wants to play the piano - and how?
- Will the instrument be used for piano lessons?
- How important is the quality of the instrument? Sound? Playing feel? Value and intrinsic value? Previous history? Size? Condition? Brand? Purchase price? Follow-up costs? Mobility?
- Which sound do you like best?
- What budget can be invested?
- What follow-up costs are acceptable?
- Where will the piano be located and what is the room climate there?
- Will you be moving frequently?

It is highly recommended to look at many different instruments and try them out. Even if no two instruments are exactly alike, preferences can be recognised. The process of elimination often helps. It also makes sense to seek expert advice. The condition of the instrument as well as the quality of the workmanship and adaptation to individual and spatial characteristics (intonation and regulation) are very decisive for the sound and playing behaviour. An instrument of choice only becomes the instrument of your dreams when it has been customised to your individual wishes.
Ultimately, the path to the dream instrument often leads via almost dream instruments. And it's worth it. Some of our customers have two or more pianos, as it is not possible to combine all their dreams in one instrument.
