The rare predecessor of the paper piano roll was produced primarily in the late 19th century by Hupfeld (Patent No. 429419) for its Electric Piano, which was manufactured in two versions: No. 63 with a 61-note compass and No. 263 with a 76-note compass. Instead of paper, these instruments used compressed fibreboard (Pressspan) rolls. The rolls for the No. 63 are identified by catalogue numbers in the 5000 series, those for the No. 263 by numbers in the 8000 series, and the rolls for the Electric Piano with Mandolin attachment by numbers in the 3000 series.
