A fortepiano by Matthäus Andreas Stein, dating from around 1820. Walter, Streicher, Stein – the great names of this era of piano making, associated with Mozart, Beethoven, and many other great masters, are treasures in major collections. Instruments by André Stein are extremely rare. This six-octave fortepiano is similar to the famous Clara Schumann fortepiano housed at the Robert Schumann House in Zwickau, which many will recognize from the former German 100-mark banknote. The instrument is currently undergoing restoration.
